The Needles section of Canyonlands is named for the pointy spires you see in some if my pics. Why they aren't called "hoodoos" like in Bryce Canyon, I'm not sure. This section is more remote than Island in the Sky. I went on a really nice hike from Elephant Hill that the ranger recommended. The other section, called The Maze, is true rugged backcountry where you "need a 4wd and the ability to repair it or the road if necessary." Might be a fun place to go get lost for 2 weeks.
