The Salton Sea was formed in 1905 when the Colorodo River flooded into irrigation canals dug for the Imperial Valley. For 18 months the river drained into an ancient lake bed known as the Salton Sink, creating the largest lake in California, before finally being put back on it's proper course to the Gulf of Mexico. Since the Salton Sea is a terminal lake, and due to the local farmers practice of periodically flooding their lands to get rid of excess salt, the Salton Sea is 1.5 times the salinity of seawater and rising. Soon it will not be able to support the saltwater fish and waterfowl that have called it home for the last 100 years or so. It's all here in this pamphlet...
