After leaving Death Valley, I got to the south-western tip of the Mohave National Preserve right about sunset, just enough time to drive up through
the western side of the park. Halfway through the drive is a weird little outpost in the middle of nowhere called Kelso.
I was really captivated by the vast emptiness and
stark beauty of the place. I think if you wanted to tramp around in the desert and not see another human for a week, this would be the spot.
I plan to come back sometime, all by myself with a bunch of books. I heard a quote once: "the desert is a very subtle place". That thought has always
resonated with me, even though I can't quite put my finger on what it means.
